Table 7a.2 Principalship’s Role in the Personalized Mastery Cycle Continua

Key Points

1. How are learners’ roles emphasized in each step of the Personalized Mastery Cycle?

The learner becomes an integral partner in each step of the Personalized Mastery Cycle. The end results must answer the question: “Do the steps of the cycle improve student learning?” The learners need to have an opportunity to choose their appropriate method of assessment, evaluate the results of that assessment, plan for relevancy and setting goals, and access resources that will result in learning. This happens within a collaborative classroom environment where the learners are constantly giving and receiving feedback for improvement.

2. What is the change in the teacher’s role in the Personalized Mastery Cycle?

The teacher’s role becomes more of a facilitator of the learning environment and a collaborator with the learners to improve their learning. The teacher still provides direct instruction when the learner needs it.

3. How does backward-planning from the standards support the Personalized Mastery Cycle?

The teachers must identify the priority standards, use proficiency ladders to grasp the learning progression of the standards, and create the pre-, formative, and summative assessments before planning the resources, groupings, and approaches to support each learner.

4. What do principals need to know themselves as they develop the skills and knowledge in the Personalized Mastery Cycle in their staff?

Principals need to understand that they must be as knowledgeable as their staff. They must self-assess their level of skills and knowledge and cultivate themselves as instructional leaders in the areas of developing standards-based unit and lesson design, assessing, evaluating, planning, and teaching and learning.

5. What is the principalship’s role in developing a plan-do-check-adjust for staff to implement the Personalized Mastery Cycle?

The principalship must create a plan-do-check-adjust cycle that involves having a plan, recruiting the right staff, creating the tools and processes they will need, professionally developing the staff, involving the learner, ensuring accountability, and celebrating results.
